Commercial Loan Underwriter

Our client, a financial institution, is seeking an experienced Commercial Loan Underwriter to prepare comprehensive credit analyses for commercial loan relationships. This role is responsible for evaluating financial information, assessing borrower creditworthiness, and ensuring that loan decisions comply with internal credit policies as well as all applicable federal and state regulations.

The Commercial Loan Underwriter plays a critical role in supporting sound credit decisions by providing in-depth analysis, risk assessment, and clear written recommendations. This position works closely with lending officers and internal partners throughout the underwriting and approval process.

The position offers a competitive salary of up to $130,000 along with a full benefits package.

Key Responsibilities

The Commercial Loan Underwriter manages the loan underwriting process by underwriting, processing, and coordinating the closing of commercial loans in accordance with bank lending policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. The role collects and analyzes financial data to evaluate the financial condition and risk profile of borrowing entities and individuals.

Responsibilities include performing detailed financial statement analysis, collateral evaluations, ratio and trend analysis, and industry analysis. The role conducts stress testing for commercial real estate loans and prepares written summaries of loan terms and conditions, along with narrative credit memoranda outlining business background, key risk factors, and justification for assigned risk ratings.

The Commercial Loan Underwriter performs thorough reviews of balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, tax returns, business plans, and financial projections to assess a borrower’s capacity to service existing and proposed debt. The role identifies credit risks and assists in structuring loans to mitigate those risks while assigning appropriate risk ratings.

Additional responsibilities include monitoring loan repayment activity and taking appropriate action on past-due or matured loans, preparing documentation required for internal approvals, and collaborating with account officers to negotiate loan terms and obtain additional information needed to support credit decisions.

The role ensures compliance with all bank policies, procedures, and applicable state and federal banking laws and regulations. The Commercial Loan Underwriter may also serve on internal task forces or committees as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field. Candidates should have at least five years of experience in commercial banking or commercial lending.

Strong experience with cash flow analysis, ratio analysis, and financial projections is required. Candidates must also demonstrate solid knowledge of real estate appraisal methodologies, field audit examination techniques, and commercial banking regulations. Formal bank commercial credit training is preferred.

The successful candidate possesses strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills, along with excellent writing, communication, and conceptual abilities. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Sageworks, and other relevant bank systems is required. Strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently with limited supervision, and familiarity with the assigned market are highly desirable.
